Broadway will be the setting for Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter’s next fantastic adventure. The performers and lifelong friends, who first collaborated 35 years ago in the 1989 sci-fi comedy Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, are working together again, this time on a new production of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot.
Jamie Lloyd will direct the production, which will premiere on Broadway in the autumn of 2025 at an unspecified New York City venue. This will be Reeves’ Broadway debut.
“We’re incredibly excited to be on stage together and work with the great Jamie Lloyd in one of our favorite plays,” Reeves and Winter, both 59, said in a joint statement.
In the famed existential masterpiece, which is generally regarded as one of the finest plays of all time, Reeves will portray Estragon and Winter as Vladimir.
The original French text was produced between 1948 and 1949 before having its world debut in Paris in 1953. An English-language version debuted in London in 1955 and toured the United States the following year.
Its first Broadway production, starring Bert Lahr and E. G. Marshall, premiered at the John Golden Theatre in 1956. The next year, Earle Hyman and Mantan Moreland directed a revival of the play at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre.
Other revivals occurred in 2009, with Bill Irwin and Nathan Lane, and in 2013, with Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.
Lloyd has been a popular classics interpretation in recent years, often starring famous A-listers. The two-time Tony nominee has collaborated with stars such as Jessica Chastain (A Doll’s House), Tom Holland (Romeo & Juliet), James McAvoy (Cyrano de Bergerac), Emilia Clarke (The Seagull), Tom Hiddleston, Zawe Ashton, and Charlie Cox (Betrayal).
This autumn, he will appear on Broadway in the widely anticipated production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard, starring Nicole Scherzinger. The show, which opened in London, has already received seven Olivier Awards (the UK equivalent of the Tonys), including best musical revival and accolades for Lloyd and Scherzinger.
Reeves and Winter became longtime friends after meeting on Bill & Ted. Bill Preston (Winter) and Ted Logan (Reeves) reprised their roles in the cult-classic series’ second and third installments in 1991 and 2020, respectively.
“I think of him as my brother,” Reeves said of Winters in a 2020 New York Times interview. “We enjoy each other’s company, as well as our respective perspectives on the world. When we get together, it’s like, ‘What are you thinking?’ ‘I don’t know, but this is kind of hilarious.’ ‘Yeah, that’s kind of strange too.’ “
The two immediately “clicked as friends,” Winter told SYFY Wire that same year.
“That happens in life very rarely,” he told me. “We have a very similar worldview. Keanu is a highly brilliant guy, and I like his intelligence and perspective on the world. We laugh our butts off.
